Venue: The Gurkha Museum, Peninsula Barracks, Romsey Rd, Winchester SO23 8TH and online via Zoom (recordings of each day will be available to both in-venue and online attendees for 7 days after each event).  The live events run from 10.30am - 3.30pm. Participants joining online via Zoom will be admitted from about 10.15am and can join and leave the event as required. They will also have the option to view or catch-up via the recording.

Price: 

£35 per day in venue, to include coffee/tea, light lunch with wine or soft drinks;

£13 per day for online attendees.

THE ART OF TEXTILES

The most sensuous form of Art

Colours and patterns dazzle. Jewels allure. Stitches, pleats and weaves deceive. Listen as they crush, crinkle and swish. Textiles delight the senses.

Throughout the last 2000 years textiles have not only been important utilitarian products for human life but are frequently works of art in themselves displaying complex designs through pattern and pictorial imagery.  Textiles come in a variety of materials: wool, silk, satin, brocade, cotton, linen, canvas and many more.  Their usage is also very broad, including: tapestry, clothes, soft-furnishings, carpets, wall-hangings and they reflect the style and fashion of different eras. The immense artistic skill and creativity of weavers, embroiderers, garment makers, carpet makers and upholsterers is not only recognised by patrons but also by the many galleries and museums which include them in their collections.  Textiles are artistic forms in themselves but also often appear in other art forms including painting, sculpture and theatre setting the scene, suggesting values and beliefs and acting as symbols.   Through this series of study day lectures we will explore the history and artistic value of a broad range of textiles from the Medieval period to the modern world.

Sarah performed on her own reproduction and antique instruments, demonstrating the development and evolving sound and repertoire of the harp throughout its history.

The Society has donated an archive chest to St. Faith's Church as part of the work being carried out by our Church Recorders.  As you can see from the photo, the church and Rector Tom Kennar are delighted with this.
